South Korean Builders Explore Projects with Multilateral Development Banks

In‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ South Korea, 100 local construction and engineering companies of about 100 will take part in the two-day event titled “2025 MDB Project Plaza” in Seoul where they will delve into joint infrastructure projects via conversations with several multilateral development banks (MDBs) to be held abroad.

These institutions comprise global players financing the transport, energy, and environmental infrastructure sectors in Africa, Central Asia, and Latin America. The event is supported by KOTRA (Korea Trade- Investment Promotion Agency) and the Ministry of Industry.

The point of the argument: On the one hand, Korean companies offer cutting-edge know-how and technology, on the other hand, there are numerous developing countries supported by MDBs that have significant infrastructural financing needs (which are estimated to be around US$40 billion of the potential procurement market). The Korean government intends to extend a helping hand to its enterprises to penetrate these markets through projects led by the MDB.

The output: South Korea is moving its construction sector in a way that it can take advantage of opportunities abroad with the help of the government, the skills of the private sector, and multilateral finance.

For companies, this is a gateway to new locations and clients outside the domestic market. For development banks, it means additional rivals, higher-quality contractors, and possibly quicker project execution. For countries receiving investments, it is likely to enhance the quality of infrastructure and the pace of economic ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌growth.
