Sequoia Reportedly Joins Anthropic Funding Round, Backing Another Major OpenAI Rival

Sequoia Reportedly Joins Anthropic

Sequoia Capital is set to invest in Anthropic, the AI startup behind Claude, according to a report cited by TechCrunch from the Financial Times. The move is drawing attention because Sequoia has already backed other major players in the same AI race, including OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI.

In the venture capital world, it is traditionally seen as unusual for a firm to fund direct competitors in the same category. Investors typically prefer to place their biggest bets on one winner. Sequoia’s decision signals that the rules are shifting in AI, where the market is expanding so quickly that many firms now want exposure to multiple top contenders instead of choosing only one.

A huge funding round in the works

The Financial Times report says Anthropic is aiming to raise $25 billion or more, and the round could value the company at around $350 billion.

According to the same report, the fundraising is being led by Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC and US investor Coatue, with both reportedly committing $1.5 billion each.

It also states that major tech companies like Microsoft and Nvidia have committed to invest up to $15 billion combined, while other investors are expected to contribute more than $10 billion.

These discussions are still ongoing, and the final structure and number could change before anything closes.

Why Sequoia is stepping in now

The report suggests Sequoia’s interest comes as part of a broader shift inside the firm. The Financial Times notes that Sequoia is approaching AI investments differently after a leadership shake-up late last year, with Pat Grady and Alfred Lin taking over as co-leaders.

It also adds that earlier leadership had passed on prior Anthropic rounds, partly due to concerns about too much venture capital piling into a small number of highly valued startups. Now, the scale of the AI opportunity appears to be pushing firms like Sequoia to widen their bets.

What this means for Anthropic

Anthropic is one of the most watched AI companies in the world because of its Claude chatbot and developer-focused AI tools. The report also says the company’s revenue has grown sharply and that Anthropic may be preparing for an IPO as early as this year.

If this funding round closes anywhere near the numbers being discussed, it would be one of the largest private fundraising events in the AI industry so far, and it would give Anthropic even more firepower to compete in model development, enterprise deals, and AI infrastructure.

The big picture

Sequoia backing Anthropic after already backing OpenAI and xAI shows how intense the AI race has become. The category is no longer a simple winner-takes-all bet. Instead, it is starting to look like a long-term platform shift where multiple giants can win at the same time.
