Stock Market Close September 23, 2026: Sensex Gains 299 Points

The stock market closed on September 23, 2026, on a positive note, with the Sensex gaining 299.17 points and the Nifty 50 rising 117.80 points. The Sensex settled at 74,828.25, while the Nifty closed at 23,446.80 as investors responded to steadier crude oil prices and hopes for diplomatic mediation between the US and Iran.

The rebound came after recent market pressure linked to elevated oil prices, with crude remaining around the $100-per-barrel level during Wednesday’s session.

The Stock Market Close on September 23, 2026 saw the Sensex rise 0.40 per cent, while the Nifty50 added 0.50 per cent. Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance and Hindalco Industries featured among the leading gainers on the Nifty50.

Broader markets also finished higher. The Nifty MidCap 100 gained 0.69 per cent and the Nifty SmallCap 100 advanced 0.88 per cent, showing stronger participation beyond the benchmark indices.

Sector performance was mixed. The Nifty Metal index led the sectoral gains, rising more than 2 per cent, while FMCG stocks also performed well. IT stocks, however, remained under pressure and emerged as the weakest-performing major sector.

The Indian stock market today also benefited from stronger domestic economic signals. A better-than-expected September flash PMI supported confidence around economic activity, while the absence of a corresponding increase in inflationary pressure provided another positive factor for investors.

According to Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, buying interest was supported by the broader macroeconomic environment and gains in Asian markets. Metals and banking stocks led the advance, while subdued IT shares limited the benchmarks’ upside.

For the Indian stock market today, attention is likely to remain on oil prices and global risk sentiment alongside domestic growth signals in the sessions ahead.
