TikTok Surpasses YouTube and Instagram to Become Top News Source for Young Adults in the US

TikTok has become the number one social media site for news for the youth in the U.S., surpassing YouTube and Instagram in the process. A current research conducted by the Pew Research Center has revealed that TikTok is now responsible for the majority of news daily consumption by people aged 18-29 years old among other large social apps.
In the survey conducted in 2025, approximately 43% of young adults said that they took news through TikTok regularly. This puts the ephemeral video app just a step ahead of YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. In general, social media still represent the main source of news for this young demographic group, as 76% of them admitted that they often or sometimes turn to social media for news, whereas the percentages for traditional news sites or email newsletters are much smaller.
TikTok’s emergence as a news source is a manifestation of a larger trend in the way young people are engaging with the news.
